Denver is one of the best places to celebrate Christmas in the country.

Really, it is—the Mile High City is home to so many fun, family-friendly holiday events that you probably couldn’t attend them all even if you tried. Whether you’re just visiting or you’re considering relocating to Denver, the events we’ll explore below will convince you that our great city is one of the merriest around.

Let’s kick off the festivities with a Denver Christmas tradition that’s been going strong for over 40 years…

The Denver Parade of Lights

The first Parade of Lights in Denver was in 1975. Since then, this yearly tradition has lit up the city with not only beautiful Christmas lights, but a free parade, music, food, and of course Santa Claus himself. This family friendly event takes place toward the beginning of December, making it the perfect way to start off the Christmas season in Denver.

The Denver Pavilions is one location in the city that really expresses Denver’s Christmas spirit. A stroll beneath the lights and seasonal decorations sets the mood for an unforgettable holiday experience with family and friends.

The carousel is likely to be the main attraction for your little ones. However, adults will be impressed by the fine craftsmanship and attention to detail put into the carousel while their children go for a ride. Rides are free if you bring a food donation for the Food Bank of the Rockies (canned or otherwise nonperishable). Otherwise rides are only $3.

After riding the carousel—probably more than once!—you can enjoy shopping, eating, or simply enjoying the ambiance with a leisurely walk down the 16th street mall.

The Denver Botanic Gardens Christmas Event

Called the Blossoms of Light, each year the Botanic Gardens transform into a holiday themed wonderland. While this is an excellent destination any time of year and should definitely be visited in the summertime, the Christmas event at the Gardens is truly a sight to behold.

Visit at night to be truly stunned, as the entire area is covered in beautiful, colorful lights. As if that weren’t enough, over 150 animated “light sculptures” can be viewed ranging from animals to Christmas themed classics. If you really want to get into the spirit of Christmas, this is a great place to do it.

A Christmas Classic at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House

Taking your family to see an incredibly well produced classic play is an experience everyone should have at least once. The Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver is the perfect venue to introduce young ones to the world of the stage.

Each year, the opera house puts on a spectacular production of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. Perfect for the Christmas season and enjoyable even for those who don’t usually hang with the ballet crowd, don’t miss this magical event.

We’re not talking about a few strings of Christmas lights here and there—these decorations are big, bright, and animal themed. Light sculptures featuring favorites like giraffes, bears, and gorillas dot the property.

Santa must be very busy this year, because he makes an appearance at the Denver Zoo as well.

The DAVA Art Bazzar runs through December and into early January. It’s a fantastic opportunity for art lovers to view and purchase a variety of artistic works, ranging from paintings to pottery. Young artists from around Colorado and local artists alike.

Proceeds from the event go to sponsoring the Downtown Aurora Visual Arts program, which provides art education to young people aged 3 to 17.
